Tiny Scanner: Every Document You Need in Your Pocket

90

If you are a student or work in an office, you’re probably familiar with the situation when you need to quickly send someone a document, but it is only available on paper. Granted, a student can use a copy center or their university’s facilities, and the office worker can resort to a fax machine or a desktop scanner. However, all these ways have one significant flaw: they are inefficient compared to just picking up the phone, making a couple of scans and sending them via e-mail. Your smartphone can run a multitude of apps that make this quite possible, so let’s take a closer look at one of them - Tiny Scanner.

Functionality 8/10

Tiny Scanner is a handy app that lets you scan a document using your device’s camera, turn it into a PDF file and even share it straight from the app.

The Tiny Scanner app is a universal one, which means that you can install it on your phone and tablet, and it is going to automatically fit the screen on both devices. Once you have installed it, you can open it and start scanning documents - it’s a simple as that. Just tap the “Plus” button at the bottom of the screen, and you'll be taken to the camera interface where you can take a shot of the document you need to scan. The camera is quite smart, for instance, it will turn on the flashlight automatically if there’s not enough light for a high-quality shot. If you still don’t like the result, you can retake the photo before going to the next step. Once you have a photo you like, you can proceed to resizing it and configuring the parameters according to which your photo will be turned into a PDF file. You can choose the size of the page (A4 being the default one with multiple other options available), the color scheme of the future PDF (colorful, grayscale, black and white), as well as the color contrast level. As to resizing, Tiny Scanner is capable of recognizing the borders of the document automatically, but if the program fails to do that correctly or if you need to further customize your document, you can do just that by dragging the corner dots in the right direction.

When all settings have been configured, the app will process the photo and output a PDF version of it. Now you can go on to add more pages to the document (by either using the camera again or selecting photos from your camera roll). If your document consists of a single page, you’ll want to return to the main menu, but before you can do that, you’ll be asked to name your new file. After naming the document, you can share or export it in a variety of ways, ranging from sending via e-mail to opening it in a different app (iFiles, for instance). If you need to send the file to your desktop computer, there is an option of sending PDFs via Wi-Fi. If the files are private or important, you can protect them with a password. Also, you can save the image file to your camera roll in case you want to have not only the DDF file but also the original photo.

The Pro version of Tiny Scanner offers, even more, possibilities for sharing files: you can upload them to Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, OneDrive or iCloud Drive or even export them straight to Evernote. Also, in the paid version you can send the file to yourself and print it directly from Tiny Scanner (the free version only lets you fax the PDF via the additional TinyFax app). In addition, Tiny Scanner Pro has no limitations regarding the number of PDF files you can simultaneously keep in the app and the maximum number of pages every single document can have.

Overall, Tiny Scanner is a good app that is going to be really helpful for people who work with documents a lot, but the limitations of the free version make it less competitive against similar apps in Play Market.

Design 10/10

The design of Tiny Scanner looks quite attractive, using the contrast between light and dark interface elements quite smartly. The documents have high-quality thumbnails, which makes it easier to find the right file quickly and efficiently. In fact, Tiny Scanner’s sleek user-friendly interface might be the deal breaker in deciding whether to invest in the paid version or not.

Usability 9/10

The user interface is really easy to navigate, so you shouldn’t have any problems controlling the app. Should you have any, you can write to the Tiny Scanner team, who promise to answer and explain the solution to your problem as soon as possible.

According to the developer’s claims, Tiny Scanner is optimized to run smoothly even on older or budget phones, but in reality, users with low specification devices may experience some freezes and/or crashes. Typically, no data is lost after such crashes, so it’s not a major issue, yet it may prevent you from purchasing Tiny Scanner Pro.

Cross-Platform Use 8/10

You’ll be able to find Tiny Scanner in both Play Market and App Store, but good luck installing it on devices that run any OS other than Android and iOS. Granted, there isn’t much sense in having a scanner app on a desktop computer, but it would’ve been nice to see Tiny Scanner available for Windows Phone/Mobile, Windows 10, Blackberry OS and Amazon devices.

In-App Purchases

Tiny Scanner is a free app, but in fact, you have to pay $4.99 to unlock unlimited document storage, unlimited document size, and batch mode scanning, so it’s actually closer to the freemium concept.

Conclusion

Tiny Scanner boasts an impressive amount of functionality, which should be enough even for the most demanding users. However, there are way too many limitations in the free version to use it on a regular basis. You should regard Tiny Scanner as a demo version for Tiny Scanner Pro rather than a standalone app. Admittedly, not everyone needs lots of document exporting options, but being able to store only a couple documents at a time makes the free version of Tiny Scanner unsuitable for heavy use.

Conclusion

Tiny Scanner Pro is a great app with all functionality you’ll need from a portable scanner, while the free version of Tiny Scanner is subject to a lot of limitations and might be insufficient for frequent use.

Pros : Great user interface;
High-quality scans;
Extensive document sharing and exporting capabilities;
Extensive document editing options;
Universal app.

Cons : Free version has too many limitations;
Poor crossplatform availability.
