ShareIt Review: There Are Files In The Air

File exchanging is one of those challenges our routine operations sometimes grow into. To copy some music to your phone or photos from your phone onto your PC, you have to connect the phone via a cable, to set up Wi-Fi connection with file manager plugins or even extract your memory card to connect it to your PC via USB reader (oh, the 2000's!)

Lenovo ShareIt is a service made up to simplify this process. Now this app is promoted by Lenovo, though it’s not locked and you can use it, no matter what’s the manufacturer of your devices. The app has been made as versatile as it gets.

Functionality 9/10

The app or rather, the service, can transfer almost any kind of data. All it takes is having your devices connected to the same wireless network.

It’s worth noticing that received files are stored in ShareIt’s own directories sorted by type. If you need to have a certain file sent to your phone via ShareIt, you’ll need to find the directory named SHAREit in your phone’s root directory and then select the kind of content to choose the right inner directory. But if you need to access those files directly on your phone or tablet to open or share them, you can do it directly from within the app.

But there's much more to this app. It can be used as a remote controller for presentations, with the possibility to switch the slides remotely. Intuitive gestures make it easy for you to control your presentation even if you use ShareIt for the first time.

Photo broadcasting feature is useful when you want to show some pictures to your audience but you don’t want these files leaked out. You just need to install ShareIt both on your computer and your phone, and then you can demonstrate your photos on your PC monitor without sending files.

There is also a built-in tool for backing up all the photos from your phone onto your PC. As if you didn’t have enough photo backup tools, but, look, this one is completely local. So if you don’t trust cloud storage services, this is what you need to unload your phone memory.

After all, if you set up the access, you can browse the files on your PC directly from your phone or tablet and copy all you need with no need to touch your PC at all.

Last but not least: as transfer log looks like a chat, yes, you can send or receive text messages between different devices in ShareIt network. It can be useful for a family or corporate chatting. No need to mention that these messages can be of any length and have media files attached.

Design 9/10

It takes just a look to understand how it works. When at your PC, you just need to drag-and-drop your files to transfer them. Mobile devices have it even easier; you don’t even have to open files from the app, you can as well use Share function and send any file or content piece via ShareIt from any file manager or almost any app.

The mobile app grants easy access to all received files (unless you have removed or renamed them manually). They are all accessible by icons at the bottom of the app’s main window.

The app interface is correctly translated into most popular languages. It's hard to get lost in its interface. Specific features like image broadcasting or presentations have a small but informative tutorial you see before using them for the first time.

Usability 9/10

Each time you start a seance, you have to connect your devices to each other. So, ShareIt on your PC demonstrates a QR code you have to scan with your phone camera. It grants security and makes the connection process easy.

When you send a file from device to device, you often need to open it immediately on the receiving side. ShareIt has this feature built-in. The files are sent and received without annoying notifications. When the transfer is done, you can see the file on both devices (as Sent or Received, correspondingly). On a PC you need to use a three-dot context menu. On smartphones, your received files can be accessed from the menu below or from transfers history displayed like a chat.

There are strange little things about the app. For example, the QR code scanner won’t work in portrait mode, you need to turn your phone or tablet round into landscape, and then it catches the code at once. But you’ll get used to these things once and they stop bothering you.

Cross-platform use 9/10

The developers have done the impossible. Lenovo ShareIt is available for all popular mobile platforms Android, iOS, even Windows Phone! and for Windows PC. You can download ShareIt from its official page with links to all the official markets. We recommend you not to trust any third-party sites offering you ShareIt for PC and other platforms.

Mac users may only hope Lenovo developers pay attention to their platform, but if you have an ecosystem made of Mac and iGadgets, you don’t need a third-party solution like ShareIt app to have all your devices integrated.

In-app purchases

None at all. Seriously. The app is completely free and not limited or restricted in any functions. There’s even more: the app (for any OS) has no third-party ads. What looks like ads is, in fact, a built-in help system with visual instruction. Well, Lenovo is the type of corporation to afford offering such tool for free.

The Bottom Line

ShareIt is a service that fills the gaps existing in today's ecosystems including desktop PCs and mobile devices. While some tasks it has been developed for can be solved by built-in solutions, the whole combination is a unique and useful tool for home and office use.

Conclusion

If you need to create an ecosystem based on smartphones and tablets with different platforms or only on Android/Windows, it’s hard to overestimate ShareIt as the service for sharing files and demonstrating pictures and presentations.
