Today, everything's going virtual, and so do the gyms. If you can’t afford the time to visit the real gym or hire a personal trainer, you can get it digitally. It’s the question of motivation, of course. But if you’re reading this, you’re already motivated a bit, right?

Select Your App

The variety of fitness apps is shocking, so there'll be a special guide on them. They mostly propose a basic workout generator based on your data, for example

  • age;
  • height;
  • weight;
  • fit level;
  • your goals. 

Many of the apps are made for running and cycling, but there are also ones developed for home and gym training. They contain video instructions and meters for the right number of repetitions and sets.

The free services usually have different levels of complexity, with free basic level and paid advanced. Well, if you were an experienced athlete, you wouldn’t be reading this, heh? So the basics will do for you now.

It doesn’t matter if you use Android or iOS; the apps are mostly versatile. But Windows Phone users would have it harder with much narrower options.

Arrange Your Home

It's annoying as hell to listen to the quiet ticking of your phone dynamic, especially if you’re holding heavy gears or using apparatus making heavy noise. But you can use external acoustic systems if the sound is the most important thing for you. Don’t neglect it even if you have some experience. The counting sets the tempo that’s easy to lose without external rhythm.

Looks like real environment

If you’re mastering some new exercises, what you need is a large screen with video instructions provided by most services. The most obvious way is using Miracast or WirelessDisplay technology to transfer the contents of your phone screen onto the TV or monitor. This technology streams sounds as well, so you can make it as loud as you need. You can launch an audio player at the same time and set up the volume so it doesn’t mute the counting.

If your TV doesn’t support wireless connection, you’ll have to purchase a Micro USB to HDMI cable and optionally a dock station to connect your devices easily. The other solution may be Apple TV or Chromecast.
Last but not least: keep the distance between the TV or monitor and your workspace not to damage the screen with a heavy dumbbell or other gear.

Gear's Always On You

Using a fitness tracker is a good idea. Today’s market is full of different fitness wearables, starting with cheap Xiaomi with basic functions and up to Jawbone and Garmin premium devices. Smartwatches are also somewhere around, both Apple Watch and Android-compatible ones.

Choose your fitness!

Yes, most of them share the basic functionality of pedometer, heart rate monitor, sleep tracker, inactivity indicator and some more. But some of them have extra features important for precise tracking. 

For example, it may be a barcode scanner for counting calories in your food, a display with time and reminders, advanced movement recognition and more. It would make sense to purchase a basic level device first, and then decide on buying something advanced.

But don’t rely on its data completely as it’s very approximate. Many exercises to do at home involve movements not recognized by tracker. 

For example, while you’re doing push-ups, your wrists are not moving, so this activity is not recorded, but it’s done, and you’re burning calories.
So the tracker is a good assistant for everyday activities, but a specialized sporting app does better.

Plan Ahead

Specialized apps are good, but there are also general purpose ones helping you in making your plans. First of them is your system calendar. Plan your workouts carefully:

  • Select the most suitable time for you.
  • Do two or three workouts to measure their real length. It may differ from the estimated time, when, for example, you need to rearrange your dumbbells several times.
  • Set reminders. You should have enough time for your preparations.
  • Set your priorities. It’s your decision, no one controls you but yourself. So do it for yourself!

There are other things like motivation, of course, but these are beyond our topic. And of course, the training equipment can’t be virtualized, it has to be real.
